82. Handewerk-In-'n-Koffiewinkel Dag

Wat beplan jy vir die 1ste September? Dis 'n donderdag so ek vermoed seker nie veel nie. Wel.... not for long!

(Wel, dis logies as jy 'n wol fanatikus is.)

a Mustard seed share....

the washed buffet
Posted: 22 Aug 2011 04:56 AM PDT

Those of you with sharp eyes may have noticed the buffet behind the dining table in yesterday's post.

It's had a pretty amazing makeover.  This piece is also confirmation that I married the right man. As a youth pastor, my husband helps a lot of people move and every once in a while he gets first crack at some furniture someone wants to sell or get rid of.  He came home one day after a move and said, "Oh.  These people were getting rid of a piece of furniture and I thought you might want it.  It's OK.  It's not as bad as some of the pieces you bring home."  Ha!  So, I went outside to check it out, certain he had picked up some 1970's monstrosity with obnoxious hardware and a shape I just couldn't work with.  I was so surprised to see this...

...a lovely antique buffet. A little mistreated (that faux painted wood is just wrong) and a little dinged up, but a very lovely piece.

I knew this piece was going to be a beast, but I decided to give it my all. I stripped the paint off the top to reveal the natural wood.  I didn't stain it, but opted to just wax it.  The base was painted in ASCP's Paris Gray followed by a "wash" of equal parts Old White and water.  I brushed on the Old White mixture with a chip burhs and wiped it off with a dry cloth. Lastly, I hit the edges with some sand paper and waxed it with clear, soft wax.

The knobs are carved and have a sort of tortoise shell look.  I purchased them at Hobby Lobby and they worked perfectly with the scale of the piece and the wood top.

My husband is usually pretty relaxed about all of the furniture coming and going in our home, but he was really hesitant about letting this one go.  "Are you sure you want to sell it?  It would look great in our family room with a flat screen TV hung over it."  Oh boy, you're speaking my language.  Then, the reality of my empty space at Lucketts flashed into my mind and I strengthened my resolve.  "Don't worry.  I'll find another one."  I have to confess that I wouldn't have been too disappointed if it hadn't fit up the steps to my third floor space, but it did.

Now, let's just hope I find another one!

jewelry...combined with crochet a MUST

do you remember these?

this is what i've made of them

See the full gallery on Posterous
the first is a bracelet with two glittering buttons, but without the flowers. i crocheted chains and closed it into a ring, followed by one row of h dc. i rolled up the bracelet and wrapped yarn around two sides and then attached the buttons. this bracelet can easily function as an suspender sleeve.

second, i made a necklace and attached the flowers with buttons on it. with aqua-colored yarn i made basting stitches and sewed the buttons tighter. then i made a matching bracelet with a button for decoration.
alternatives
  • you could make a narrow belt if you don't close the chains into a ring. you can make a closure with a small clasp or with a buttonhole or a loop and a button.
  • as an alternative for the bracelet you can think of this as a decoration at the ends of sleeves, for example.

give away
Img_5788
if you know a girl who would love to wear the necklace with matching bracelet, you can post a comment to tell me. you can do this until august 30 (tuesday) and shortly thereafter, i will reveal my choice from the entries.
extra info
you can not open the bracelet and it is to small to fit an adult hand. the necklace is also fine if the girl wears her hair in a ponytail or a knot. maybe i'm a bit cautious but i do not think the jewelry is suitable for the youngest, but i will leave that up to you.
i am looking forward to your entries!

Combine Knitting and Crochet to Create a Freeform Hat

I've been doing some downsizing and going through old projects,
and just found this freeform knit and crocheted hat
that I made many years ago. I still like the hat --
although maybe it's a bit dated now -- but I think the ideas and techniques I used to make it are still valid and interesting.

Freeform crochet is one of my favorite crochet techniques,

amazing....body art done with Henna

Eid Celebration- New Henna (Mehndi) designs
Posted: 22 Aug 2011 06:30 AM PDT
Henna (Mehndi) is used by South Asians, for traditionally celebrating events, weddings and festivals.
I love Henna. Here is a round up of a few wonderful New Henna Designs of 2011 for all my South Asian friends, that I loved the most. I hope all my other readers also find it fascinating, as it surely does appeal to the eyes.
========================
The Arabic Henna designs are always so pretty. I usually like the designs of the tattoos that are not completely filled, for me less is always more.
Arabic Mehndi Design
source

I love the use of color in this Henna Design, it looks so vibrant and fun

I like the diamonds and the designing inside on these pretty hands
I always think it's so hard to put Mehndi, I was never good at it.
It requires a lot of patience and creativity for sure
source

Now this is the kind of Mehndi design I had on my hands on my wedding.
Bridal Mehndi Design
 source

People who are really good at applying Mehndi, they literally hold the cone like an artist holds the brush and every now and then you will see amazing ideas coming through.
Can you imagine shading with a Mehndi cone?
source

When there are going to be pens for applying Mehndi, things will be a whole lot easier for people like me. :)
And that day I will be trying this design. It looks easier than others.
source

A typically empty but unique design
source

Love this half moon idea on both hands. Beautiful Tattoo design for Eid
source

Love it!
source

What beautiful flowers
source

Easy and cute
source

Arabic Mehndi designs and Pakistani/Indian Mehndi designs are so merged into each other that I can hardly distinguish anymore. But who wants to distinguish! They all look amazing
source

A sweet pistachio shaped Henna design
source

A simple pistachio design. Pistachio designs never go out of fashion.
source

The bands and flower in Mehndi are always trendy and new.
source

Pretty scallop shaped design

This is another easy Henna design, for beginners like me with a very clear vision
source

A garland of flowers applied on hands, a very nice Mehndi design
source

and finally my most favorite Henna (Mehndi) Design. I am surely going to ask someone to apply this on my hands. :) I especially love the fingers, very pretty
source

I hope you all enjoyed these wonderful Henna designs. What do you think about it?
I am so excited for Eid, it's the most awaited festival of the year for the Muslims.
